Yngling
European Youth Championship & Torey Pellegrini
Hello from members Dave
and Pam Pellegrini. We thought we would let you know that our son Torey
joined his college sailing coach, John Ingalls of Sakonnet, RI and
friend, Bruce Chafee from Boston to win the Yngling World Sailing
Championship in Lelystad, Netherlands on July 17-23.
Just prior to the World Championship, Torey sailed his Yngling to a
silver medal in the European Youth Championship accompanied by his
younger brother, Stephen Pellegrini, age 17 -senior at Sacred Heart High
School in Kingston, and Kyle Carney, age 19 - sophomore at Salve Regina
University and resident
of New Bedford, MA.
Torey graduated from Salve Regina University in 2010 with a B.S in
Economics and a B.A. in Philosophy. As team captain, he lead the
Seahawks to their first ever Intercollegiate Sailing Association
National Championship in Madison, Wisconsin.
Below are press releases written by boat owner, teammate, and head
sailing coach at Salve, John Ingalls.
Regarding the Youth Championship
Torey Pellegrini class
of 2010 sailed his Yngling, accompanied by crew Kyle Carney '13 and
younger brother Stephen Pellegrini, to a silver medal in the Yngling
European Youth Championship held in Lelystad, Netherlands July 15-17,
2010.
Torey and team won the first two races of the event and finished up with
a 3rd and a 4th for a total of 9 points, one point behind the first
place Danish team. Unfortunately two races that Pellegrini had been
leading had to be abandoned; one due to high wind and the other due to
marks that had drifted. "It was a great event and a wonderful finish by
Torey and team" reported coach John Ingalls. "They sailed very well in
very difficult conditions with huge waves and 30 knot blasts."
Celebrations are on hold as Torey prepares to crew for Ingalls in the
grueling Open World Championship that begins tomorrow and runs through
the
24th of July.
Regarding the World Championship
After finishing 2nd in the Yngling European Youth Championship, Torey
Pellegrini '10 joined the Salve Sailing Team coach, John Ingalls and
friend Bruce Chafee, to compete in the Yngling World Championships held
in Lelystad, Netherlands, July 17-23. After six consecutive days of
sailing, the trio bested the fleet of 52 boats from 11 countries to
stand atop the podium to be crowned World Champions and receive their
Gold Medals. "It was a grueling event" commented Ingalls, "and with a
field consisting of 5 past world champions the competition could not
have been more intense." "It was a pleasure to coach Torey in college
for the past 4 years which culminated with Salves first ever trip to the
college national championships, but getting a chance to actually compete
with him in the same boat was a great honor and a wonderful way to
complete his college sailing career!"
